Description
Michael Baker International is seeking a full-time Architectural Historian III to support our west region cultural resources group. Under supervision of the Architectural History Practice Lead/Technical Manager, the primary function of the Architectural Historian III is to lead or perform a variety of tasks that may include field survey and photography of historic-era resources, online and in-person archival research, writing architectural descriptions, developing historic context statements, conducting National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources, and various local register evaluations, assess project impacts, develop proposals, supervise/train junior staff and casual/part-time staff, and participate in internal and external business development activities. The position includes the lead, preparation and review of technical reports, CEQA/NEPA environmental documents, as well as other tasks as assigned. The position requires interfacing with clients, both internal and external, and preparing scopes of work and proposals for acquiring new work, therefore; communication and writing skills are key to success. Travel for field survey will occasionally be required throughout California.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The approximate compensation range for this position is $90,000 – $125,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field
- 8+ years of experience working as an architectural historian preferred
- Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for architectural history.
- Working knowledge of CEQA/NEPA/Section 106 of the NHPA and any other federal and state laws that apply to history and architectural history.
- Demonstrated ability to author CEQA/NEPA/Section 106 of the NHPA technical reports including identification studies, historic resource evaluations, design reviews, finding of effect reports, memorandum of agreements, and programmatic agreements.
- Demonstrated ability with completing California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 forms.
- Experience in local government preservation planning highly desired.
- Working knowledge of architectural styles.
- Strong on-line and archival repository research skills.
- Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated exceptional technical writing ability.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare project proposals with detailed scope task breakdowns, schedules and budgets.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of architectural historians.
- Ability to lead tasks and project budgets, including administration procedures, contract compliance, and other project management responsibilities.
- Capable of working in both an office and field environment.
- Ability to communicate through all contemporary business mediums (i.e., email, telephone, video conferencing.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- A valid California driver’s license. Experience working in California is preferred.
- Ability to travel throughout California and other western states, if necessary.
