WNBA Referee Performance & Development Advisor

Position Summary

Reporting to the WNBA Referee Performance & Development Leader, the WNBA Referee Performance & Development Advisor will participate in all aspects of WNBA performance and development, including the training and evaluation of WNBA referees. During the WNBA season, the primary focus will be to enhance the overall performance of the WNBA referee staff by providing developmental feedback to referees. Additionally, the role will assist with off-season, pre-season, and in-season clinics, camps, and candidate evaluations for hire to the WNBA.

Major Responsibilities

  • Observe games In-Arena, online, or on TV, as assigned, and complete evaluation forms for each official with video examples and developmental comments
  • Identify notable plays, and conduct a post-game review in the locker room when attending games live
  • Utilizing the Referee Engagement Performance System to submit individual interactions and evaluations for each member of the crew
  • Assist in day-of-game meetings/calls and post-game video breakdown when necessary
  • Participate in various departmental meetings and special assignments, including deep dives into games as requested
  • Complete playoff game deep dives as assigned
  • Assist in the development of training curriculum, including REPS playlists, suggesting curriculum items, and conducting presentations as requested
  • Participate in team, broadcast, and fan clinics as needed
  • Participate in the hiring and playoff selection processes
  • Contribute feedback and collaborate on the writing of WNBA referee midyear and end-of-year evaluations
  • Attend various WNBA and Referee Operations events including but not limited to, Spring Head Coach’s Meetings, Fall CCM, W-RSPM, WNBA Pre-Season On-Court training events, G-League Winter Showcase, NBA Summer League events
  • During the off season, serve as a development advisor to the G League staff as assigned, including watching game In-Arena, online or on TV
  • Participate in training activities in collaboration with Referee Operations and Human Resources to develop the necessary skills to be an effective Performance and Development Advisor

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Extensive rules knowledge across the NBA, WNBA, and G League
  • Proven ability to work independently and efficiently while traveling
  • Exceptional attention to detail skills, especially related to business writing
  • Strong communication skills in delivering performance messaging
  • Ability to collaborate well within and across multiple levels of the organization
  • Public speaking and presentation experience
  • Familiarity with video tools for evaluation and development
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs including – Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook

Experience Needed

  • A minimum of ten years of officiating professional-level basketball

Educational Background Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferred

Salary Range

$125,000 - $155,000
