Tech Lead

Motivo Health is helping solve the nation’s behavioral health crisis by supporting therapists through the licensure process. Similar to doctors going through residency, therapists must complete two years of supervised experience following graduate school. Historically, these hours had to be completed in person, but the rise of digital health now allows supervision to occur virtually in most states. Motivo partners with over 170 community mental health organizations, treatment centers, digital health companies, and health plans to provide virtual access to quality, vetted clinical supervisors across all 50 states. We are a fully remote team, so you are welcome to live and work wherever you choose - our only requirement is that you are based in the US and primarily work from a timezone within Eastern through Pacific time.

We are hiring for a Tech Lead to provide hands-on technical leadership for our small but mighty Engineering team, which is responsible for development of Motivo’s proprietary digital platform to facilitate clinical supervision.

This is a lead-by-example individual contributor role with high technical ownership – without direct people management responsibilities. You will report to the VP of Product.

Your responsibilities will include:

Direct Technical Contributions (60%)

  • Lead complex implementations: Take direct ownership of the most technically challenging projects, holding the bar high for quality and timely delivery
  • Excellent code reviews: Provide thorough and timely code reviews that elevate code quality and ensure long-term viability of codebase
  • Technical problem-solving: Be the go-to person for diagnosing complex issues and crafting solutions that incorporate business and technical considerations

Technical Leadership (20%)

  • Technical mentorship: Provide technical guidance and skills development for the rest of the engineering team through 1:1s, pairing, code review feedback, and collaborative technical discussions
  • Code quality champion: Lead by example with excellent code, establish team standards for testing and reviews, and guide the team toward reducing technical debt
  • Technical strategy: Guide technical decision-making on system architecture, technology choices, and technical debt prioritization
  • Security & compliance guidance: Ensure security and privacy best practices are embedded in our development approach

Project and Process Leadership (20%)

  • Project leadership: Lead the most complex or cross-functional projects from kickoff through execution. While all engineers are expected to own projects, this role sets the tone for how projects are led across the team
  • Process leadership: Drive continuous improvements in how we plan, execute, deliver, learn, and iterate as a team
  • Product partner: Collaborate closely with the VP of Product to ensure technical execution aligns with business goals and user needs

Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: React, Material UI, Apollo Client
  • Backend: Node.js in TypeScript, Express, Objection JS, Apollo Server
  • Database: PostgreSQL on Google Cloud SQL
  • Infrastructure: Docker-containerized apps running on Cloud Run, App Engine in Google Cloud Platform, deployed via Github Actions and Google Cloud Build

We're looking for someone who is excited to work with these technologies and has a demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies as needed.

Culture

This job could be a great fit for you if:

  • You care deeply — about users, teammates, code quality, and the mission we’re working toward
  • You want to join a company that empowers you to come up with your own ideas to achieve our goals and supports you in executing them
  • You value autonomy, but know when to loop others in and ask for input
  • You are excited by the prospect of collaborating closely with non-technical users and stakeholders
  • You’re brimming with ideas about the technical direction and best practices you’d like to pursue
  • You’re energized by the prospect of solving a really hard and important problem in society
  • You want to be a part of creating an entirely new category within the mental health domain
  • You take your work seriously but enjoy a healthy amount of goofiness in the workplace

This job may not be for you if:

  • You thrive on pre-existing and well-defined structure and process that you don’t need to question
  • You’re not comfortable talking directly with stakeholders and users, troubleshooting, collecting feedback, and pushing back on asks that don’t make sense or are low priority
  • You’re uncomfortable taking ownership of cross-functional projects or coordinating directly with stakeholders
  • You’re uncomfortable contributing to collaborative technical discussions or advocating for your ideas
  • You prefer well-documented instructions on how and what to execute

Qualities and qualifications
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated technical leadership on complex projects in a collaborative environment
  • Lead-by-example approach: You're known for shipping complex projects on time and with quality, wrangling production issues with a cool head, and never hesitating to take on boring-but-important tasks
  • Team-oriented leadership: You can influence and guide without formal authority, and you love helping others grow their technical skills
  • Product-minded engineering: You understand how to make smart tradeoffs between business outcomes, user needs, and technical decisions.
  • Process improvement mindset: You want to help shape structure and process rather than inherit rigid systems
  • Healthcare technology interest: Genuine interest in mental health and healthcare technology, including a pragmatic curiosity toward AI

  • Medical, vision, and dental benefits
