Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced, remote Audit Manager to lead and deliver high-quality financial and compliance audit engagements for state and local government clients. The Audit Manager will oversee audit planning, execution, and reporting for municipalities, counties, school districts, and utilities, ensuring compliance with GASB, Single Audit/Uniform Guidance, and relevant regulations. This role combines technical accounting expertise, team leadership, and client relationship management to drive timely, accurate, and value-added audit services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple concurrent audit engagements for state and local government clients, including cities, counties, school districts, and utilities.
- Develop audit plans, allocate resources, set timelines, and ensure adherence to professional standards (GAAS, GAGAS) and GASB pronouncements.
- Oversee execution of financial and compliance testing, including Single Audit engagements under OMB Uniform Guidance, and review workpapers and draft audit reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Supervise, mentor, and train audit staff and seniors; provide on-the-job coaching, performance feedback, and professional development guidance.
- Maintain strong client relationships by communicating audit progress, findings, and recommendations clearly and proactively; provide practical guidance to address control deficiencies and process improvements.
- Coordinate with client finance teams and external stakeholders to obtain necessary information, resolve issues, and ensure timely completion of deliverables.
- Review and approve financial statements, management letters, and audit opinions; ensure deliverables meet quality standards and firm policies.
- Stay current on accounting and auditing standards, GASB updates, OMB Uniform Guidance changes, and industry best practices; implement necessary changes to audit methodology.
- Utilize audit software and data analytics tools to increase efficiency, identify risks, and support audit conclusions; promote continuous improvement in audit processes.
- Manage engagement budgets, staffing, and billing; identify opportunities for additional services and contribute to business development efforts.
Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; advanced degree or additional certifications (e.g., CIA) a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of public accounting audit experience, including progressive supervisory or managerial responsibility; experience in a public accounting firm highly preferred.
- Direct experience auditing state and local government entities (cities, counties, school districts, and utilities) is strongly preferred; experience with these client types is a plus.
- Solid knowledge of GASB accounting standards, Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), and Single Audit/OMB Uniform Guidance requirements.
- Proven experience preparing and reviewing government financial statements and management reports.
- Strong leadership, communication, and client service skills, with the ability to manage teams remotely and build trust with clients across diverse government entities.
- Proficiency with audit and accounting software (e.g., CaseWare, TeamMate, IDEA) and advanced Excel skills; familiarity with data analytics tools is beneficial.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills; ability to prioritize deadlines and manage multiple engagements.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for client meetings, fieldwork, and team events as required.
