Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management Analyst


The Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management Analyst is a member of a team responsible for performance analysis, capacity planning, exception monitoring and alerting, performance reporting, and problem resolution services for mainframe environments. This includes the z/OS operating system, along with CICS, Db2 and IMS. This team ensures that mainframe environments have adequate system resources to perform effectively and meet business objectives in a stable, cost-effective manner. In addition, they identify, research, and recommend the adoption of new features and industry best practices for improved performance, availability, and cost efficiency.


This position requires a strong work ethic, being a self-starter, working well in a team environment, excellent written and verbal communications, and being adept at providing outstanding customer service. Members of the team interact with business partners for support issues, work with other teams to drive opportunities to enhance performance, efficiency and quality through best practices, and participate in on call rotation.


About This Role:


Multiple mainframe environments – Production, DR, and Test


  • Set system parameters at CEC, LPAR, and subsystem levels including memory and CPU, soft capping, job class, WLM administration, scheduling environments, message regions, bufferpools, and zparms
  • Ensure that the mainframe infrastructure is properly sized and tuned
  • Proactively create, maintain, and respond to system alerts and monitoring thresholds to catch exception situations before they escalate to problem situations
  • Identify, research, and recommend industry best practices for improved performance and availability
  • Research and exploit where needed new operating system and subsystem features to enhance stability, performance, and availability
  • Assist business partners, as needed, with performance concerns and measurements
  • The Ideal Candidate for This Role has:
  • Experience with z/OS in both a sysplex and stand-alone environment
  • z/OS Performance and Tuning Knowledge
  • Experience with using Rumba and TSO
  • Experience with JCL, SAS, and REXX
  • Strong debugging skills using available tools
