Geographic Information System Officer

GIS Officer (Remote – Contract Role)

Client-Side Project Management Consultancy – Natural Disaster Recovery

Work from Home (Australia-Based)

Damage Control Project Management (DCPM) is a specialist consultancy helping Local Councils recover from natural disasters under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). We combine project management expertise with technology, GIS, and data capabilities to deliver critical recovery outcomes for communities across Australia.

The Role

As a GIS Officer at DCPM, you will play a key technical role in acquiring, analysing, managing, and producing spatial data that supports disaster recovery programs. Working closely with our project management team, you will maintain and enhance our GIS systems, spatial databases, and mapping products. Using QGIS, PostGIS and Python, you will contribute directly to the creation, management and delivery of high-quality spatial datasets, dashboards, field data collection systems, and mapping outputs.

The role will also adapt to your strengths—whether in spatial analysis, database management, field data workflows, or GIS automation. This position suits a candidate who enjoys problem-solving, data-driven decision support, and improving spatial systems in a dynamic project environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire, analyse and format spatial datasets for use across DCPM’s mapping and spatial product portfolio.
  • Produce high-quality maps, spatial visualisations and reporting outputs using QGIS and ArcGIS Online and web apps.
  • Maintain and administer the company’s PostGIS spatial database, ensuring data integrity and performance.
  • Provide technical advice on the design, development and delivery of spatial data, mapping, data collection workflows, and GIS architecture.
  • Configure, maintain and support QField projects for field data collection, including preparing data, updating projects during collection phases and processing returned datasets.
  • Extend the capability of open-source GIS tools by developing scripts, plugins, and automation solutions using Python.
  • Support integration of GIS outputs into project management workflows, reporting systems, and council submissions.
  • Collaborate with project managers and technical staff to ensure spatial data accuracy, consistency and audit readiness.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation, metadata, and spatial data standards across the organisation.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in GIS, geospatial information, spatial science, data analysis or a related discipline.
  • 2 years or more industry experience.
  • Experience using QGIS or similar GIS platforms.
  • Practical capability with spatial databases such as Postgres/PostGIS.
  • Python scripting experience for GIS automation or geoprocessing tasks.
  • Strong English communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • Ability to provide clear technical advice to non-technical team members.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to data accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining collaborative communication.
  • Experience with field data collection tools (e.g., QField) highly regarded.
  • Understanding of road infrastructure or disaster recovery workflows is desirable but not essential.

  • Meaningful work contributing to critical natural disaster recovery initiatives across Australia.
  • Supportive team environment with ongoing training and career development opportunities.
