Financial Planning and Analysis Manager
The Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis plays a critical role in supporting strategic financial decision-making for a health plan administrator. This position oversees budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and performance analytics across medical claims, administrative operations, premium revenue, provider reimbursements, and plan profitability. The FP&A Manager will partner closely with executive leadership, actuarial teams, operations, and underwriting to drive financial discipline and help optimize the organization’s cost structure and growth strategy.
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS ROLE:
1. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process, including revenue, medical expense, SG&A, and capital planning.
- Develop monthly and quarterly financial forecasts, incorporating emerging trends in medical claims, membership, and operational performance.
- Partner with business unit leaders to validate assumptions and ensure forecast accuracy.
2. Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Produce timely monthly financial reporting packages, including variance analysis against budget, forecast, and prior year.
- Monitor KPIs such as medical loss ratio (MLR), administrative cost ratio, claims trends, per-member-per-month (PMPM) metrics, and cash performance.
- Analyze cost drivers and identify opportunities to improve margin performance.
- Support actuarial teams in estimating IBNR and understanding claims development patterns.
3. Strategic Planning & Decision Support.
- Support business cases for new product launches, technology investments, and operational improvement projects.
- Provide insights on membership trends, provider network performance, utilization management impacts, and regulatory environment changes.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Operations, and Sales teams to ensure financial alignment.
- Collaborate with Accounting on month-end close to ensure financial accuracy and proper accruals.
- Present financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
5. Tools, Systems, & Process Improvements
- Improve FP&A systems, reporting tools, and forecasting models.
- Enhance data accuracy and streamline financial workflows.
- Support development of automated dashboards integrating data from claims systems, enrollment systems, and ERP tools.
HERE’S WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field required.
- 5+ years of experience in FP&A, financial analysis, or similar roles in health insurance, TPA operations, or healthcare finance.
- Deep understanding of MLR drivers, healthcare claims data, PMPM metrics, and utilization trends.
- Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) and FP&A software platforms (Workday Adaptive, Limelight, Data Rails, Cube).
- Prior management or team-lead experience is a plus.
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
- Ability to interpret complex datasets and distill actionable insights.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, including experience with executive audiences.
- Strategic thinker who can work independently and lead cross-functional efforts.
- Comfortable working with ambiguous or incomplete data.
- Strong business judgment and commitment to organizational mission.
