Purpose

Working closely with a Data Scientist, the Quality Data Science Intern will provide support to the Quality teams efforts using advanced analytics and statistical modeling. The Quality team partners with others across the organization to improve the health and satisfaction of our members at scale.
The Quality organization tracks clinical quality of care, outcomes, and member experience. Clinical quality of care is primarily measured by HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness and Data and Information Set), while member experience is measured by CAHPS (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems). The team devotes their time to thorough and accurate quality measurement and identifying opportunities for improvement.
CareFirst runs a year-round internship program. The ideal candidate is someone who can commit to work throughout the year part-time up to 15-20 hours in the Spring/Fall AND full-time 40 hours in the summer.
Duties
Education Level: This position requires an individual working towards at-least a bachelors degree from an accredited College or University.
Experience: Junior or Senior Undergraduate student or Graduate student targeting majors in Math, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Business or related field with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above.

- Extract, manage, and analyze data for reporting and recommendations
- Develop ad hoc and strategic reporting to support Quality initiatives
- Build pilot projects to explore potential data-driven solutions and products
- Communicate findings and recommendations to Quality leadership
- Explore complex and messy data sets and learn to derive and communicate actionable insights
- Learn to use R or Python, SQL, Tableau, and automation tools such as Alteryx
- Gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare quality landscape
- Have the chance to apply statistical techniques to data

- Statistical programming experience (SAS, R, Python, or similar)
- Basic SQL programming experience
- Experience with healthcare quality measurement or improvement
- Exposure to data analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
