Science Assessment Reviewer
Learning Explorer seeks a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Science Assessment Reviewer to support the development and refinement of high-quality K–12 science assessment items.
This is a remote, contract position that requires 20-30 hours per week over the summer with opportunities for continued part-time contract work during the school year.
This opportunity is ideal for professionals with a strong background in science education, particularly those familiar with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and a commitment to educational equity and rigorous assessment design.
In this role, you will evaluate science assessment items for standards alignment, scientific accuracy, structure, cognitive demand, clarity, and overall quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review science assessment items for:
- Alignment with NGSS and other science learning standards
- Scientific accuracy and grade-level appropriateness
- Structure, clarity, and appropriate cognitive complexity (Depth of Knowledge levels)
- Accessibility, language clarity, and inclusive practices
- Provide constructive, actionable feedback to item writers
- Collaborate with assessment design managers and other reviewers
- Work efficiently within assessment platforms and project management tools
- Meet established deadlines while maintaining high standards of consistency and quality
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in science education, a scientific discipline, or a related field
- Teaching experience in K-12 science, preferably at the middle or high school level
- Strong understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and/or other state science standards
- Prior experience in assessment development, editing, or item review for K–12 science
- Familiarity with assessment design principles and a variety of item types (e.g., multiple-choice, constructed response, technology-enhanced)
- Excellent analytical skills and strong written communication
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting while collaborating effectively with team members
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.)
- Experience with Trello or similar project management tools is a plus
- Familiarity with K–12 assessment management platforms is a plus
- Top candidates will be required to provide item review work samples
Must be available 20-30 hours per week over the summer.
