Junior System Engineer
Junior Systems Engineer Intern
Location: Central Indiana
Organization: BNI Central Indiana
Job-Type: Fully remote
Work Schedule: Approx. 10-12 hours per week, flexible scheduling
About the Role
We’re looking for a systems-minded individual to join our regional BNI team for a 6-month internship focused on AI tools, no-code automation, workflow design, and systems support. This internship is designed for someone who wants hands-on, resume-building experience in automation, AI, and operations at a fast-moving small organization.
This is a no-code / low-code role.
Ideal candidates enjoy workflow tools (Zapier, Airtable, Notion, Power Automate) and prefer building systems by configuring existing platforms, not writing custom software.
If you’re seeking a software engineering internship involving programming, app development, algorithms, or full-stack work, this is not that role.
What You'll Work On
You’ll get to participate in real-world projects like:
AI & Automation
- Building and maintaining workflows in platforms like Zapier, Power Automate, AirTable, and others.
- Designing AI-assisted systems using ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and custom prompts
- Testing, updating, and troubleshooting automations used by our regional operations team
Data & Systems Operations
- Supporting our digital infrastructure across Sharepoint, G-Suite, AirTable, Notion, and CRM tools.
- Helping structure data pipelines, integrations, and reporting dashboards.
- Organizing, cleaning, and improving dataset flows across multiple platforms.
UI & Internal Operations
- Helping refine workflows for accessibility.
- Simplifying multi-step processes into clean, automated systems.
- Documenting processes into clear, reusable SOPs.
R & D Future Projects
- Experimenting with AI tools to optimize business operations.
- Exploring no-code solutions for new regional initiatives.
- Helping scale the systems that support hundreds of BNI members across Central Indiana.
Who We're Looking For
You might be a great fit if you are:
- A student or recent grad in Informatics, Computer Science, HCI, Engineering, Business Tech, Data Analytics, or a related field (not a requirement)
- Curious, self-led, and excited to learn automation tools
- Comfortable troubleshooting issues and digging for root causes
- Excited by efficiency, structure, and making things “just work”
- Interested in small-team environments where your ideas actually get used
- Organized enough to manage multiple small tasks in parallel
- Someone who loves AI tools and isn’t afraid to experiment with them
Familiarity with workflow and productivity tools is more important than coding. Experience with Zapier, Notion, Airtable, or Power Automate is a strong plus.
No programming experience required, and not ideal for students seeking coding-heavy internships.
Internship Benefits
Along with designing real-world systems and gaining professional experience, you'll leave with:
Professional Portfolio Pieces (3-5 Case Studies)
- Before/after workflow diagrams
- Documentation you authored
- Automation builds you designed
- A complete case study showcasing your contributions
For-Credit Eligible
We’ll complete all necessary evaluations and paperwork for your university.
